About Malta's Participation

Malta is a small island nation located at the heart of the Mediterranean, comprising the islands of Malta, Gozo, and Comino. Despite its modest land area, the country has an extensive coastline of approximately 270 km, characterized by rocky shores, sheltered bays, sandy beaches, and exceptionally clear waters. Its rich marine biodiversity and strategic location have made Malta a longstanding maritime and tourism hub.

Coastal and marine tourism are fundamental to Malta's economy, attracting millions of visitors each year for beach holidays, yachting, diving, and cultural tourism. Destinations such as Valletta, St. Julian's, Sliema, Mellieħa, Gozo, and the Blue Lagoon on Comino are among the country's most popular coastal attractions. Malta actively supports Mediterranean initiatives focused on sustainable coastal management, marine conservation, and the development of the blue economy.

Malta receives around 3 million international tourists annually, with coastal attractions representing the country's primary tourism asset. The country has established several marine protected areas and maintains numerous Blue Flag beaches, demonstrating its commitment to environmental quality and sustainable tourism. Key coastal regions include the northeastern coast, the Grand Harbour area, Gozo, Comino, and the scenic western cliffs and bays.
